Weekly Blog 1/8

Dear Wines Families,
Happy New Year. We’ve had a great start to the new year at Wines and while many kids (and staff…) had a little trouble waking up on Monday morning, the week has been energetic and everyone quickly got back into the swing of things here at school. With the new year means lots of important information. Please take a few minutes to read through this week’s message.

PTO Meeting and Speaker Series Jan. 14th
Please join us next Tuesday, January 14th for our annual PTO “Speaker Series” at the PTO meeting. Wines parent, doctor, and author Anthony DeBenedet will be speaking about the Art of Rough Housing. His talk follows his presentation last year on Playful Intelligence. Dr. DeBenedet has published two books by the same names. His talk was very well received last year and we are excited to have him back! The PTO meeting begins at 6:00 with Dr. Debenedet speaking at 7:00. Free childcare is available.

International Night Thursday, Jan 23rd
Thanks to everyone who already submitted a form to host a country for International Night! We still have plenty of space for more countries - below is a link to the form once again.
In addition to participants, we are also looking for volunteers to help before, during, and after the event - including THIS Thursday to help set up the International Night display in the main hallway! Below is a link to a volunteer Sign Up.

Lunchtime Extra Specials
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to run a lunch time extra special. We have a great group but could use a few more people—particularly anyone interested in organizing a Kindergarten activity. The commitment is one lunch period per week, for a total of 6 weeks, from Feb.4th- March 17th. If you have younger siblings at home with you during this time, feel free to bring them in with you! If you are interested or have questions, please contact Michael Newberry at mnewberry88@gmail.com.

Kindergarten/Young 5’s Round Up Feb. 5th
As we have entered 2020, we are beginning to plan for the 2020-21 school year. The first phase of this planning begins on Feb. 5th at our annual Kindergarten/Young 5’s Round Up. The event is at 6:30 PM. If you have a child who will be eligible for Kindergarten or Young 5’s, please bring them that evening. We are already beginning to put our list of students together so if you know your child will be joining us, please email Robin Moore at moorero@aaps.k12.mi.us and provide your child’s information (name, birthdate, etc.). Please alert your friends and neighbors as well. To be eligible for Kindergarten, students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1st, 2020. Science Olympiad: We Need You!
We're still in need of many event coaches for Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO).  Please consider coaching an event.  No experience necessary, it's super fun and many of the curriculums have already been created.  It's a great event and opportunity to donate your time and talents to our community.  Please direct any / all questions to scienceowines@gmail.com.

Friday Floor Hockey
A number of students and parents have inquired with me about when we will be starting our Friday before school Floor Hockey games. We will begin soon. I am looking for two parents who would be willing to help run the games on Friday mornings (I ask for two so you can share the duties). It is very easy to run, we just need an adult who likes to have fun! If you are interested, please let me know. I will organize the first couple of games so you will know how the games run. Again, it is a very easy role and quite fun.

Thanks for reading!

David
