Weekly Blog 1/29

Dear Wines Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are heading into February. While we may still experience the “teeth” of Winter come February, every day is a day closer to spring! Below is the news for the week.

Parent Involvement Day Feb. 10
Our staff is excited to host our families on Feb. 10th for our annual Parent Involvement Day. In addition to the opportunity to join your child/children in class, we have other great opportunities that day. Our PTO will be providing coffee and light refreshments when school begins. Staff will be providing lunch to any parent who is able to stay. Staff will also provide snacks all day. We have parent workshops with our partners from the Human Rights Campaign’s Welcoming Schools program. In addition, we are partnering with the Generosity Project who will be on hand to pass out bags for families to fill for The House By the Side of the Road. This is an optional at home family service project to support this great community organization. We know they are collecting kids pajamas, socks, underwear, and boys pants. A more complete list of items to collect will be available that day.

Below is a link to RSVP to Parent Involvement Day. It is most important that we have information on how many adults are eating lunch with us and also how many adults are joining our parent workshops. Please fill out the brief RSVP form below so we can gather this important information.

Y5/K Round Up: Time Change
As I hope you know from previous emails, our Kindergarten/Y5 Round Up is next Wednesday, Feb. 5th. It has come to my attention that in the various publications from the school district in the Ann Arbor Observer, etc. the start time is listed as 6:00 and not 6:30 as I have advertised locally. While we will still likely wait until 6:30 to get things started, we do expect folks to arrive earlier due to this small error.  Again, if you have a child who will be eligible for Y5 or Kindergarten next year and/or have friends and neighbors who do, please join us with your child. If you know your child is coming to our school next year, please contact Robin at moorero@aaps.k12.mi.us and let her know so we can add them to our list.

Current Young 5’s Families: You do not need to attend Round Up. We will provide you information on registration requirments at a later date.

Disability Awareness Workshop - Call for Volunteers!
Our annual Disability Awareness Workshop will be on Wednesday, March 18. We're in need of parent volunteers to help out with this wonderful event for our 4th grade students. You do not have to be a parent of a 4th grader to volunteer!
To volunteer, click here for the online sign up
Any questions, please contact Jessi Averill 267-495-6208 or jessi.averill@gmail.com

Thanks!
David

Weekly Blog 1/8

Dear Wines Families,
Happy New Year. We’ve had a great start to the new year at Wines and while many kids (and staff…) had a little trouble waking up on Monday morning, the week has been energetic and everyone quickly got back into the swing of things here at school. With the new year means lots of important information. Please take a few minutes to read through this week’s message.

PTO Meeting and Speaker Series Jan. 14th
Please join us next Tuesday, January 14th for our annual PTO “Speaker Series” at the PTO meeting. Wines parent, doctor, and author Anthony DeBenedet will be speaking about the Art of Rough Housing. His talk follows his presentation last year on Playful Intelligence. Dr. DeBenedet has published two books by the same names. His talk was very well received last year and we are excited to have him back! The PTO meeting begins at 6:00 with Dr. Debenedet speaking at 7:00. Free childcare is available.

International Night Thursday, Jan 23rd
Thanks to everyone who already submitted a form to host a country for International Night! We still have plenty of space for more countries - below is a link to the form once again.
In addition to participants, we are also looking for volunteers to help before, during, and after the event - including THIS Thursday to help set up the International Night display in the main hallway! Below is a link to a volunteer Sign Up.

Lunchtime Extra Specials
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to run a lunch time extra special. We have a great group but could use a few more people—particularly anyone interested in organizing a Kindergarten activity. The commitment is one lunch period per week, for a total of 6 weeks, from Feb.4th- March 17th. If you have younger siblings at home with you during this time, feel free to bring them in with you! If you are interested or have questions, please contact Michael Newberry at mnewberry88@gmail.com.

Friday Floor Hockey
A number of students and parents have inquired with me about when we will be starting our Friday before school Floor Hockey games. We will begin soon. I am looking for two parents who would be willing to help run the games on Friday mornings (I ask for two so you can share the duties). It is very easy to run, we just need an adult who likes to have fun! If you are interested, please let me know. I will organize the first couple of games so you will know how the games run. Again, it is a very easy role and quite fun.

Thanks for reading!
