Weekly Update 4/24

 Dear Wines Families,

I know there is a lot of uncertainty, worry, anger, and many other emotions surrounding the financial situation our district finds itself in. Unfortunately, I do not have any new information to share about what will or will not happen as far as next steps or if and how Wines will be impacted. As I said a few weeks ago, I will be transparent with our staff and our community every step of the way. I will say that Wines is very healthy in terms of enrollment and we are anticipating a fairly significant increase in enrollment next year including the addition of a second Young 5's classroom due to such high demand.

I want to express my deep gratitude to our staff who, understandably, share in the uncertainty and worry. However, they have been absolutely professional from the beginning and have not let this situation impact their students in any way. I’ve never been prouder of this staff in any of my fourteen years at Wines.

Noon Hour Volunteers Needed

Looking for a great way to spend some time at Wines and help our kids out in the lunchroom and the playground? We are looking for noon hour volunteers as our crew has thinned a bit temporarily with vacations and other commitments. This is a very fun job and now that the weather has turned a bit, it won’t be cold! If you are interested, please contact our coordinator Randa Choate at choate.rj@gmail.com.

Last Call: Parent Input for Class Placement Due Today

As we prepare to make class placement decisions for next year, if you would like to provide information about your child to help us in this process, we welcome it. Below is a link to a parent input form. Filling out the form is completely optional. Please be aware that we do not accept requests to be in a specific teacher’s classroom or to not be placed with a specific teacher. Such requests will be deleted and not considered. Below is the link. Note: Today is the final day we will be accepting input.

Thanks also Liz Martin, Lauren Cunanne, Caroline Smith, Dan Papajcik, Al Tokatlian and all of the parents who helped with art projects, set up, clean up, marketing, etc. And big thank you to everyone who made silent and live auction bids and to all of our wonderful sponsors (please see a list of sponsors and links at the end of this message).

Our schools are well-prepared for the eclipse on April 8 between which is occurring in the Ann Arbor area between 2-4:30pm with the fullest viewable part of the eclipse occurring between 3:15-3:45pm.

Many of our classrooms have planned viewing events and some are planning a practice session with the glasses. Floor Hockey Season is Over

Our Friday Morning Floor Hockey season has come to an end for the school year. I want to thank Anastasia and Todd Yocum who have volunteered to run the program for many years. Their dedication, organization, and enthusiasm have made this an enduring tradition at Wines. As their third child leaves Wines at the end of this school year, we will pass the torch to another volunteer next year. In addition to the Yocum’s, I want to thank Mrs. Knoll for her strong support each week as well as Mr. Mosher who is a weekly participant as well. And thanks to kids from all grade levels who come to school early and participate in the game. We’ll be back at it next winter!

Weekly Update 3/20

Dear Wines Families,

I know the news that was shared last week regarding the AAPS budget was a quite a surprise for our families and our entire community. The Wines staff and I share in that surprise. Unfortunately, this situation leaves us all in a state of uncertainty and, perhaps, worry. Please know that my focus as the leader at Wines is to protect our staff, students, and parents from budget adjustments as much as possible and I am committed to continuing the high level of teaching and learning (and fun!) that our community has come to expect at our school. I make the same promise to you that I made to our staff: I will be completely transparent and share information as soon as I have it. I will be honest throughout this process and I am here for anyone at any time who would like to discuss anything. While our district financial situation will present some challenges and difficult decisions, I am certain that Wines will continue to be the place that we all know and love.

Report Cards
Report cards will be sent home via secure email on Friday. 5th grade families will receive a second email with your child’s Instrumental Music report.

Lunches with Love Success!
I’m pleased to report that last week, Wines students donated 554 pounds of food for Lunches with Love. Spearheaded by parent Megan Hastie, every student participated in this community service project where kids learned about food insecurity in our community and they packed lunches for those in need. Thank you, Megan, for bringing this important opportunity to our kids.

In addition to Lunches with Love, our school did a great job with the Rotary Club/Food Gatherers Food Drive. We filled three bins!

Tues, Apr 9
Tues, May 14

Art Night
Art Night won’t be happening until May, but we are looking for a volunteer to help coordinate this year’s event. Duties include organizing a team to hang artwork and publicity. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mr. Wyse at wyse@aaps.k12.mi.us.

Request From Neighbor on Newport Road
Our neighbor across the street from the Newport Road entrance has asked that during afternoon Driveline pickup, cars that are waiting along Newport please not block their driveway. Most days, our cars do this. However, there have been times when parents have stopped in front of the driveway blocking access to their home. Thank you!

If you are traveling next week, please have safe travels. When we return from Spring Break, we have what I always describe as the sprint to the finish as spring is the busiest time of year here at school. It’s also the most fun time of year!

Weekly Update 2/14

Dear Wines Families,

Before I get into today’s news, I want to extend some well-deserved thanks and recognition. First, I want to thank Robbie Weeks who organized the Wines Wahoo last Friday evening. If it was your first time the Wahoo, you learned quickly what a big event it is. And if you are like me and you’ve been to many Wahoo’s, I’m sure you noticed that it was put together flawlessly. Everything was about as perfect as you could ask for! And thanks to the many parent volunteers who supported Robbie and the Wahoo.

Next, I want to thank our community for participating in NAAPID on Monday. We had nearly 300 adults sign in for the day which is incredible. We always feel blessed to have such wonderful parent support at Wines and Parent Involvement Day is a way for us to extend our thanks to all of you. I also want to make sure I publicly thank the Wines staff for Monday. While we enjoy the event and see it as an important part of our school year, it is not easy on teachers and staff to have 300 additional adults in the school and it is, perhaps, the longest day of the year for our staff. But our incredible staff rose to the occasion as always and it was because of them that the day was such a positive event.

No School Friday, Monday, and Tuesday

Our Mid Winter Break starts after school on Thursday and we will be off on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. We'll see everyone back on Wednesday, February 21st.

Weekly Update 2/7

Dear Wines Families,

This spring like weather is certainly a bit odd. In the spring, our playground gets very muddy. Unfortunately, it looks a lot like March out there right now. It is important that kids bring boots to school—even when it is 50 degrees! I fear that this is just a preview of March and we’ll be muddy all over again come spring.

Wines Wahoo Friday. We DESPERATELY Need Help

The Wines Wahoo Friday is a highlight for our students and is one of the great traditions at Wines. In order for the event to be a success we need volunteers. There are many spots open. Please click on the link below to sign up.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44AEAA22A2F8CE9-46996657-wines

The Wahoo takes place at Forsythe Middle School from 6-8pm. Join your friends for a live DJ, pizza, open gym, crafts, a silent disco and more. This is not a drop off event and parents need to accompany students (certainly parents can be responsible for a small group of friends). Suggested $5 donation per family at the door with pizza, drink, and snack tickets available for purchase. THIS WILL BE A CASH ONLY EVENT.

Parent Involvement Day Feb. 12

We look forward to hosting parents on Monday for our annual Parent Involvement Day in honor of National African American Parent Involvement Day. If you are planning on coming, we do ask that you fill out an RSVP so we can have a sense of how many people to expect. Most importantly, we’d like to know how many adults will be eating lunch with us so we can be sure to order enough food. Below is a link to the RSVP. RSVP’s are due tomorrow. Link below.

Parent Seminars During Parent Involvement Day

We are excited to announce that we have added two informational sessions for parents at Parent Involvement Day next week. Below are descriptions of the two parent sessions available on Monday. Note, the sessions take place both in the morning and afternoon to try to accommodate as many parents as possible.

Make the Most out of Reading at Home

You know that reading with your student is important and your time is valuable, so how can you make the most out of reading with your student? Session topics will include choosing books for reading and activities to promote accurate word reading and comprehension. Resources and strategies to use at home will be shared to support this time together.

The workshop will be presented by Charity Lemke, Wines Reading Intervention Teacher and Building Literacy Coach along with Eleni Kastanis, Wines English Language Learner Teacher.

Sessions will run at 10:30 and again at 1:30 in Room 107.

Be Smart Firearm Safety

Join parents, caregivers and other concerned adults to learn about the important reasons for safe gun storage in homes and vehicles to protect our children, teens, and at-risk individuals. Even if you are not a firearm owning family, there are steps you can take to protect children from unsecured firearms. This presentation supports the 2nd Amendment & is designed for ADULTS only. Plan for a 30 minute presentation with Q&A after.

Presented by Wines parent, Celeste Kanpurwala

Sessions will run at 10:30 and again at 1:30 in the FLEX Room in the Wines Modular Building

Weekly Update 1/24

 Dear Wines Families,

Well, these past two weeks have certainly been interesting. Hopefully this is the end of the snow/ice/cold days this year. Unfortunately, since our days off from school have been because it has been too cold or too icy, kids haven’t had the opportunity to have a true “snow day” where they get to really enjoy the joys of winter. Here is the news for the week—it’s a little long this week with some new information and some important repeat news as well. Hopefully you can find a few moments to read it through.

Parking Lot Reminders

As the new year and colder weather have arrived, I’ve noticed a few more cars in our parking lots and some bending of the rules by many of our regulars. Here are a few reminders:

• For those using the main entrance, in the afternoon when you are exiting, please turn towards Forsythe and head to the four way stop at Sunset. Do not go all the way to the Newport entrance. This allows our busses to bypass the car line to get to the building and allows folks who want to park in the Forsythe overflow lot the opportunity to get there. In addition, if you are parking in the Forsythe overflow lot, please exit left towards Wines and then follow the curve to the Forsythe/Sunset area.

• Reminder, the main entrance should be used by grades 1-4 only. The Cooley lot should be used by Young 5’s, Kindergarten, and 5th grades. Please use the lot associated with your youngest child in your household.

• In the morning, I am seeing more and more cars arriving VERY late to school. As a reminder, students can begin lining up outside or come in for breakfast at 8:35. Our first bell is at 8:42 and students need to be in class by the second bell at 8:45. Please make morning arrangements to have your child to school on time.

• There are signs directing cars to pull as far ahead as possible. There is also a sign to stop. If you are dropping off or picking up, and there are no cars ahead of you, please continue to pull ahead as far as possible before dropping your child off or picking them up.

• Please do not get out of your car. At this point in the year, we expect that all students are able to exit and enter their cars independently. If this is not the case for your child, please utilize a parking spot and not use the car line.

• Students are not allowed to use the cross walk at the front of the building by themselves. Students can walk around the sidewalk towards the gate or a parent can accompany the student across the cross walk.

For your reference, here are the procedures for the Front Lot and for the Cooley Lot.

Young 5’s/Kindergarten Round Up Feb. 6th

Our annual Young 5’s/Kindergarten Round up is on Tuesday, Feb. 6th from 6:00-7:00 PM. This is an event for incoming parents AND students. If you have a child who will entering our Y5 or Kindergarten programs next year, please plan on attending. If you have friends or neighbors interested in our programs, please spread the word! If your child is currently in Young 5’s at Wines, you do not need to attend Round Up. Please contact me with any questions.

Noon Hour Help Wanted (Volunteer or Paid Positions Available)

We are always looking for more help at noon hour. This is a very fun opportunity to be with kids in the lunchroom and at recess. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our coordinator Randa Choate at choat.rj@gmail.com. If you are interested in being paid for the position, pay is $16/hour and while there are a few hoops to finalize employment, it’s a nice way to earn a few extra dollars! If you are interested in the paid position, please contact me directly. Please note that the schedule is flexible for both volunteering and the paid position.

NAAPID Feb. 12

Please look for an invite in your child’s folder for our annual Parent Involvement Day in honor of National African American Parent Involvement Day on Feb. 12. Parents and other loved ones can spend all or part of the day at school. We will provide lunch for parents and our PTO will provide a light breakfast. I will be sending out a digital RSVP soon.

News from the Library

In the library this month, we are focusing on the importance of having a healthy media balance and encouraging students to look for opportunities where they can take breaks from their devices. We will brainstorm activities that are fun to do individually, with friends, and as a family that are device-free. Y5-K students are learning how to regulate their emotions when asked to transition from an online activity to an offline one with the Pause, Breathe, and Finish Up strategy, 1st-2nd graders will sing along to the Balance is Important song, and 3rd-5th graders are thoughtfully considering what their media balance looks like.  Here are a few family resources to help continue these important conversations on media balance as a family:  Y5-2 Family Conversation Starter , 3-5 Family Conversation Starter, and Ways to Help Kids Balance Their Media Lives.

Weekly Update 1/17

 Dear Wines Families,

I hope this message finds you warm today and gearing up for our return to school tomorrow. I certainly know the frustrations and challenges for families when school is canceled and I hope we have warmer days ahead! I do like having snow on the ground, however, so let’s keep that around—just not too much of it! Our PTO meeting is still on for tonight (Zoom only) and International Night is still on for tomorrow.

PTO Meeting 7:00 Tonight. Zoom Only

Due to the school closure today, tonight's PTO meeting will be via Zoom only. Zoom info was included in today's email.

Girls on the Run Spring Season at Wines - registration starts January 16, 2024

We're already starting to plan for our spring season of Girls on the Run - and there are some exciting changes this year! Registration will get started a bit earlier, and the system is changing...to a lottery. So, everyone will have an equal chance of getting a spot, regardless of when you register before the deadline.

In order to have as many participants as possible, we need coaches! Any parent is welcome to help coach - you don't need to be a girl, or a runner, and you don't need to commit to the full time - part time help is welcome as well! We will practice 2 days per week from 4-5:30pm after school. We need 2 coaches for every 15 participants, so the more interest we have, the more help we need to allow everyone to participate. Please contact Sara Platte at sara.platte@gmail.com if you're interested in coaching. It's a really fun way to get to know the kids and families at Wines and to help build confidence, kindness, healthy habits and self-esteem for our upper-elementary girls.

Weekly Update 1/10

 Dear Wines Families,

What a week! As an alum and a lifelong Wolverine fan, I don’t think I’ve ever been happier! The Rose Bowl was such a wonderful game and then to see the team finish the job on Monday night and become National Champions will be something I’ll always remember. My good friend who I tailgate and go to games with said that he thinks the victory will forever change him and make him less emotional/stressed/anxious about Michigan football moving forward. I’d like to think that is true about me, but I doubt it. Another friend of mine who is not a Wolverine fan but has experienced a few championships with his favorite teams told me that after a championship, you have three years to enjoy it and then you return to your former state as a fan. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to bask in this for three years, but I’m certainly enjoying it now!

On to Wines. It has been a great return to school and the kids and staff have been able to deal with the time away, the big game, etc. and have gotten right to work. We have a number of great events coming up including International Night next week, Lunchtime Extra Specials, the Wines Wahoo, Science Olympiad, and Girls on the Run--so please read on for more information.
